Edited by: Amon Re on 10/09/2007 23:44:12 I know virtually nothing about this game. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of time working the wrong skills and not making money as fast as I could be, but I'm sure everyone wonders that - I'm more concerned as to whether I'm getting the the most out of the game in general. My ultimate goal is to get into PvP and large scale wars.
I have an ancient 4+ year old account, just reactivated. When I returned, I was fortunate enough to have a Harvester Mining Drone which became an antique in my absence and I sold it for 15 million ISK. My new balance is about 18 million. My char has level 5 on some skills, mostly mining/industry/drone related, but not enough to get any ship with a cargo hold over 1000 M except Iterons. I want to get into the mega strip mining barges or a Hulk or something, but need weeks of training still.
Anyway, that is generally the skill path I'm working on. I have a Vexor with five hammerheads and five miner I drones and four miner I lasers (for some reason I can't use the fifth slot). I have a basic shield booster, afterburner, a scanner, and as many cargo expanders as I can handle. I can only control 5 drones at a time.
I'm mining 0.5 and 0.6 space with no trouble from the pirates. My hammerheads rip them up and I take no damage, a minor shield hit which needs no repair. I feel I should be pushing harder into lower sec space but I'm just trying to get experience and avoid getting podded.
By my math, mining Omber (preferably gold/silver) I can make about 80K every 6 minutes or so, which seems pretty good. I'd love to find some Kernite and double that, but was surprised to not find any when I ventured into 0.7, 0.6, and 0.5 space. Hell, I can find Omber in 0.8 space if I look, and they're usually not strip mined and littered with giant canisters.
I hear that mining is not a good career path for someone with the ultimate goal of PVPing, since mining skills only beget more mining. But it seems like I'm already pretty invested in this path, so I should at least try to get rich from it and then figure out PvP.
I get the feeling I should start doing more PvE action to build PvP related skills instead of wasting them on mining and industrial ship skills. I don't think I'll last if I have to "work" for 6 months before I'm ready to PvP at all.
